The Legacy of June Avery

Part Two of the Story… 👇

Grandmother’s Engagement Ring

The county investigator, a tall man named Detective Vance with a tired expression and a badge clipped to his belt, stepped fully into the hospital room. He pulled a small notebook from his jacket pocket while Vanessa’s face drained of color. She looked back and forth between me and the investigator, her manicured fingers tightly clutching her designer handbag. My mother instantly moved forward, her protective instincts kicking in, though her church-lady smile had completely vanished.

“Excuse me, what is the meaning of this?” my mother demanded, her voice raising a fraction of an octave. “My daughter just had major surgery. This is highly inappropriate. Who are you people?”

Mr. Harrison, my grandmother’s longtime estate attorney, stepped forward. He had known our family for thirty years and had always been the one person my mother couldn’t manipulate. He adjusted his glasses and looked at Vanessa with a mixture of professional detachment and deep disappointment.

“Mrs. Avery, Vanessa,” Mr. Harrison began, his voice calm and resonant. “I am here today in my capacity as the executor of June Avery’s estate. Hannah contacted my office yesterday morning before her emergency surgery when she discovered certain items were missing from her safety deposit box, to which you both inexplicably gained access last week.”

Vanessa scoffed, trying to regain her footing. “I didn’t steal anything! That ring belonged to Grandma, and Grandma is gone. Hannah was just hoarding it in a box. I needed it for my wedding expenses. It’s a family matter, not a police matter.”

“That is where you are mistaken, Vanessa,” I said, leaning back against the rough hospital pillows. The sharp pain in my abdomen flared, but the sheer satisfaction of the moment kept me anchored. “You see, you never bothered to ask why Grandma June gave me that specific ring, or why Mr. Harrison insisted it be placed in a separate, legally protected trust long before she passed away.”

Detective Vance cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. “Miss Avery, according to the receipt you sent your sister, you sold a platinum and yellow gold ring featuring a 2.5-carat pear-shaped diamond to Crown Jewelers downtown for twelve thousand dollars. Is that correct?”

Vanessa crossed her arms, her chin tilting upward defensively. “Yes. And they bought it legally. I had the paperwork showing it belonged to my grandmother.”

“The paperwork you had was an old appraisal from 1984,” Mr. Harrison explained, opening the folder in his hands. “What you failed to realize, Vanessa, is that the ring your grandmother wore during the last twenty years of her life was an identical cubic zirconia replica. She had the original diamond removed and placed into a secure vault in 1999, right around the time our mother began experiencing severe financial difficulties and ‘borrowing’ family heirlooms to pay off her credit cards.”

My mother froze. Her hand dropped from Vanessa’s shoulder, her eyes widening as the realization began to sink in.

“The real engagement ring is currently sitting in a bank vault under Hannah’s exclusive legal ownership,” Mr. Harrison continued, pulling out a certified document. “The ring you took from the house and subsequently sold to that jeweler was a high-quality replica. However, the heirloom itself isn’t the issue here. The issue is what was hidden inside the lining of the velvet box you stole from Hannah’s private property.”

Vanessa blinked, looking utterly confused. “What are you talking about? There was nothing in the box except the ring.”
