PART 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

Barnaby’s fingers didn’t go for the melon, nor did they touch the mysterious red cabbage that he had been analyzing for so long.

Instead, his massive hand darted forward with lightning speed, plucking a single, ordinary green leaf from the very top of the pile.

He brought it to his mouth, chewing slowly and deliberately while keeping his eyes locked straight ahead on the empty air.

He wanted them to think he was relaxed, that he had let his guard down completely, and that the basket had successfully fooled him.

But as the crisp leaf crunched between his teeth, Barnaby felt a strange, hard object slide against the roof of his mouth.

His eyes widened in instant panic, his pupils dilating as he realized his fatal mistake in choosing the innocent-looking greens.

They hadn’t hidden the medicine in the colorful, obvious items at all; they had anticipated his suspicion and used reverse psychology.

With a sudden, dramatic sputter, Barnaby spat the leaf out onto the grass, coughing softly as he wiped his tongue with his hand.

He looked down at the rejected green leaf, expecting to see a giant white pill rolling around in the dirt next to his basket. 🌀

Instead, all he saw was a tiny, harmless, dried crunchy beetle that had simply been hitching a ride on the fresh organic produce.

Barnaby stared at the beetle as it scrambled to its feet and began to scurry away through the blades of green grass.

He let out a long, highly embarrassed breath, realizing he had just suffered a massive panic attack over a completely natural insect.

He looked back at the basket, his pride slightly wounded, but his intense curiosity and hunger quickly taking over once again.

His amber eyes scanned the perfect circle of dark berries resting on top of the bright, vibrant orange flesh of the melon slice.

They looked so sweet, so juicy, and so incredibly tempting sitting out there in the warm afternoon sunshine. 🌀

He reached out his hand once more, his movements much slower and more cautious this time as he approached the fruit.

He gently pressed his thumb against the side of the melon, feeling the firm, ripe texture of the rind against his skin.

He popped one single blueberry off the top, rolling it between his massive fingers before tossing it into his mouth.

It burst with a delightful, sweet tang, and Barnaby closed his eyes for a brief second to savor the pure flavor.

There was no bitterness, no powdery aftertaste, and absolutely no sign of Dr. Linda’s dreaded liquid health supplements.

He opened his eyes and looked down at the remaining berries, feeling a sudden wave of absolute victory wash over him. 🌀

He quickly plucked the remaining berries one by one, eating them with the delicate precision of a surgeon operating on a patient.

But the ultimate test still remained, sitting quietly in the corner of the basket like a silent, purple judge.

The red cabbage was heavy, dense, and still completely unblemished, holding its secrets tight within its tightly wrapped layers.
