Echoes of Betrayal
Part Two of the Story… 👇
Hidden Truth Uncovered
The air inside the executive suite grew heavy as Alistair stared down at the documents. The crisp, white paper felt like ice against his fingertips. There, stamped in official ink, was the name of his late son, Sawyer Fields. Right below it, on the internal clinic report detailing the incident at the construction site, was the bold, unmistakable signature of Katie Carpenter. It wasn’t just an administrative sign-off; it was a formal authorization to settle the matter quietly, out of court, ensuring the details of the unsafe scaffolding never reached the public eye.
Alistair stood up so quickly his leather chair rolled back and struck the mahogany bookshelf. He didn’t say a word to his secretary. He grabbed the file, walked out of the building, and drove directly to the sprawling family estate in Wayzata. The iron gates opened slowly, just as they always did, revealing the manicured lawns and the grand stone mansion where he had been raised to value legacy above all else.
He found his mother in the glass-enclosed sunroom, sipping tea while reviewing a charity gala program. At seventy-two, Katie Carpenter still carried herself with the rigid elegance of a woman who commanded empires.
When Alistair slammed the folder onto the small glass table, shattering the quiet atmosphere, she didn’t even flinch. She merely looked up, her gaze cool and calculated.
“You look disheveled, Alistair,” she said softly, setting her porcelain cup down. “A man in your position should never look rattled.”
“Explain this,” Alistair demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. He pointed at the death certificate and the clinic’s internal cover-up authorization. “You told me Nellie left the state. You told me she took the settlement money and wanted nothing to do with us. You never told me she was carrying my child.”
Katie looked at the papers, then back at her son. There was no remorse in her eyes, only the cold pragmatism that had guided the family business for decades. “She was a distraction, Alistair. You were on the verge of securing the Gilbert partnership. If you had stayed with her, tied down by a fragile marriage and endless medical bills, the clinic would have gone under. Olivia brought the capital we needed to build the empire you sit on today.”
“So you paid her off?” Alistair asked, leaning in.
“I offered her a choice,” Katie replied evenly. “She refused the money. She insisted on keeping the child. So, I made sure she couldn’t interfere with your new life. I ensured no doors in this city would open for her. And when the boy had his accident at our site ten years later, it was an unfortunate tragedy. But exposing our connection to him would have ruined the Crestview reputation. I did what was necessary to protect you.”
Alistair took a step back, feeling a profound sense of revulsion. The wealth, the prestige, the spotless reputation—everything he had taken pride in was built on the deliberate destruction of the woman he had once loved and the son he never got to hold. Without another word, he turned his back on his mother and walked out, ignoring her calls to be reasonable.
