The Unspoken Promise

Part Two of the Story… 👇

Cancer Patient Support

The panic in her mother’s voice made my heart drop straight into my stomach. I did not bother asking for clarification over the phone, nor did I grab my coat. I simply took the car keys off the kitchen counter and sprinted out the door, my hands trembling so hard I could barely unlock the vehicle. All kinds of terrifying scenarios rushed through my mind during the fifteen-minute drive to the medical center. Had Aaron done something reckless? Had Lily suffered a sudden relapse? Was there a confrontation between them that I did not know about? Every red light felt like an eternity, and by the time I pulled into the hospital parking garage, my chest was aching with anxiety.

I practically ran through the sliding glass entrance of the oncology ward, my footsteps echoing loudly against the polished linoleum floors. I rushed past the nurses’ station and made a sharp left toward Lily’s room. The heavy wooden door was slightly ajar. I paused for half a second, took a deep breath to steady my racing pulse, and pushed it open.

What I saw inside completely froze me in my tracks.

Aaron was sitting on the edge of Lily’s hospital bed, holding a pair of professional hair clippers in his right hand. But he was not alone in his gesture anymore. Sitting around the small, sterile room were four other people: Lily’s father, her older brother, her uncle, and even her grandfather. Every single one of them was sitting in a vinyl visitor’s chair, wearing a black plastic salon cape draped over their shoulders. On the floor beneath them lay scattered piles of dark, grey, and brown hair.

Lily was propped up on her pillows, tears streaming down her smiling cheeks, holding her smartphone to film the entire scene. Her mother was standing near the window, holding her hand over her mouth, completely overwhelmed by emotion. She turned to look at me as I entered, her eyes red from crying, and pointed a trembling finger toward my son.

It turned out that when Aaron walked into Lily’s room early that morning with his freshly shaved head, he had not just offered her comfort. He had inspired an entire family. Upon seeing Aaron’s quiet act of solidarity, Lily’s brother had immediately asked Aaron if he could borrow the clippers he had brought in his backpack. Her brother shaved his head right then and there in the bathroom. Seeing his son take a stand, Lily’s father called her uncle and grandfather, asking them to come to the hospital immediately without explaining why.
