“The ninety thousand dollars you transferred to your personal account three days ago has already been flagged as unauthorized corporate removal,” Mr. Pendelton interrupted. “The account was tied to an operational fund for Marcus’s construction firm, not personal income. By moving those funds into an external account in preparation for a divorce, you committed a federal financial infraction. The bank has already reversed the transfer. The funds are back in the trust.”
Renata frantically pulled her phone from her pocket, her thumbs shaking as she logged into her banking application. When the screen loaded, the balance read zero. Her chest heaved as panic truly set in. The apartment she had secured required a non-refundable deposit that she had promised to wire by five o’clock that evening. Desmond had assured her he would handle the rest, but looking at his terrified expression, she knew that promise was worthless.
“You’re ruining my life,” she sobbed, looking at Marcus with eyes full of desperate tears. “After everything I sacrificed for you?”
“You didn’t sacrifice anything, Renata. You endured me until you thought you found a better option,” Marcus said softly. “I built an empire while you were looking for a shortcut. I wanted a wife who loved the man in the boots, because I knew that man would always be the foundation of who I am. If you couldn’t respect the builder, you don’t get to enjoy the architecture.”
Marcus turned back toward the Rolls-Royce, signaling to the driver. The chauffeur immediately stepped out to open the door.
“You have twenty-four hours to vacate the property,” Mr. Pendelton stated, handing the final set of legal documents to a completely speechless Renata. “A moving crew will arrive tomorrow at noon to remove any personal belongings you brought into the marriage. Anything purchased with Ellison trust funds will remain.”
Desmond didn’t say a word to Renata. Without looking back, he walked down the driveway, got into his leased Bentley, and backed out of the street, leaving her standing alone on the gravel.
Renata watched the black Rolls-Royce pull away from the curb, its engine completely silent as it disappeared around the corner. She looked down at the legal papers in her hand, the weight of the truth finally crushing her. The man she had ridiculed, the man she had deemed unworthy of her future, was the very man who held her entire world in the palm of his hand. And now, he was gone.
