The world seemed to spin around Momo.
This was it. The absolute confirmation of his failure.
Not only had he probably burnt his cake, but he had also failed his audit.
The neighborhood chimps would never let him live this down.
The macaques would write songs about his ‘burnt offerings’. 😢
But Barnaby wasn’t done.
“And,” he squeaked, his voice rising, “did you, when you realized your mistake, try to correct it?”
“Or did you, Mr. Momo, simply… stand there?”
Momo’s brain was working at warp speed.
He had, in fact, just stood there.
For what felt like hours.
Frozen in the very spot he was audited.
“This,” Barnaby said, tapping his tiny pen against his tiny card, “this is a crucial point in our assessment.”
“The Bake-Off, you see, isn’t just about the taste.”
“It’s about the baking spirit.”
“The resilience.”
“The sheer panache of carrying on in the face of near-certain disaster!”
Momo stared at the mouse, a slow realization blooming in his mind.
Barnaby wasn’t criticizing him.
He was praising him? 🤔
The other jungle creatures, previously watching in amusement, were now watching in awe.
“You see,” Barnaby continued, beaming.
“A lesser ape would have panicked and run back to the cave.”
“They would have abandoned their dance, their practice, their very joy in the process.”
“But you, Mr. Momo,” Barnaby looked at the massive ape with admiration.
“You showed true artistic integrity.”
“You internalized your crisis.”
“You turned your very fear into a pose of unparalleled emotional depth!”
“This pose!” Barnaby dramatically pointed to Momo’s now iconic posture.
“The foot-up! The hand-to-forehead! The protective hand over the heart!”
“This, Mr. Momo, is the pose of a true master.”
“It’s the embodiment of ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy of the Banana’!”
“And that,” Barnaby concluded, “is why I’m pleased to announce…”
He paused for dramatic effect, letting the anticipation build.
“…that you, Mr. Momo, have just qualified for the grand finals of the Great Ape Bake-Off!”
“Regardless of whether your cake is burnt to a crisp.”
A collective roar (this time, much louder than a single macaw) erupted from the jungle clearing.
The toucan swooped down. 🦜
The marmoset did a backflip.
