Tyler stopped fidgeting with his phone entirely, staring at Madison with wide eyes. “Wait, so you used Grandma’s trust money that was supposed to be divided among all three of us?”
“She used it to buy this whole place,” I said, looking around the vaulted ceiling and the high-end finishes. “And for the last two years, I haven’t been paying you rent, Madison. I’ve been paying eight hundred dollars a month into an escrow account held by the trust executor while the legal audit was conducted. You didn’t give me a discount out of the goodness of your heart. You let me live in the basement because your attorney warned you two years ago that kicking me out or raising my rent would trigger a mandatory audit of the property’s funding sources.”
Marcus turned to Madison, his face flushed with confusion and anger. “You told me your dad gave us that money as a personal wedding gift! You said it was completely clear!”
Madison slammed her hands onto the table, rattling the silverware. “It was a gift! Dad promised me that money!”
“Dad didn’t have the authority to give it to you as a gift without securing our rights,” I explained, maintaining a calm, even tone. “The trust terms were absolute. Because you attempted to unilaterally raise my rent to six thousand eight hundred dollars tonight—a demand that clearly violates the living arrangements established under the trust’s resident protection clause—the executor has officially flagged the property for non-compliance.”
My mother finally found her voice, though it was barely a whisper. “Emma… why didn’t you say anything to us before tonight?”
“Because every time I came to this table, everyone treated me like a charity case,” I said, looking around at the family members who had sat in silence just minutes earlier while Madison mocked me. “You all laughed when she tried to push me out. You let her treat me as if I were a burden lingering in her basement, taking advantage of her kindness. But the truth is, I’ve been protecting this entire family from a massive tax fraud charge and a legal nightmare, while quietly paying off Derek’s debts on my own.”
Madison sank back into her chair, her posture deflating as the reality of the situation settled over the room. The polished confidence she had worn all evening was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, calculating look as she stared at the official papers scattered across her pristine tablecloth.
“So what happens now?” Tyler asked, looking between us.
