“She recorded a conversation in which you discussed taking the title through coercion,” Mr. Vance said, glancing down at a paper in his hands. “Along with a detailed log of a $4,200 charge for artificial turf on a credit card that did not belong to you, and photographs of injuries sustained on these grounds.”
My father’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The confidence that had sustained him for two years seemed to leak out of him all at once. He looked past the agent toward the dark windows of the house, looking for any sign of light, any sign that I was sitting at the kitchen table waiting to yield to him like I always had.
“Where is she?” my father barked, though his voice sounded thin now, cracked around the edges. “Where did she go?”
“Ms. Miller’s current location is confidential,” Mr. Vance said. “She left explicit instructions that all future communication regarding personal belongings must be handled through her attorney. Speaking of which, you have thirty minutes to retrieve any personal items currently located inside the detached garage. Your personal belongings from the main house have been inventoried, packed by a professional bonded moving service, and placed into secure climate-controlled storage.”
He handed my father a legal notice along with a brass key attached to a numbered tag.
“Your storage unit is paid through the end of the month,” Mr. Vance continued. “After that, the account transfers to your name. The address and gate code are on that sheet.”
My mother began to cry—not the quiet, strategic tears she used to manipulate family members, but genuine, panicked sobs as the reality of the situation crashed over her. “Richard, our clothes… my jewelry…”
“Everything listed in the inventory is safely stored,” Mr. Vance assured her coldly. “Nothing was damaged. However, neither of you may enter the main residence tonight, or at any point in the future. If you attempt to break the lock or enter the structure, the security system will notify local law enforcement immediately, and our firm will press full criminal trespass charges.”
