BEEP!
The box clicked loudly, and a small motorized drawer popped open from its side with a smooth slide.
Inside the tiny drawer sat a pristine, perfectly preserved, sugar-coated dried mango chip.
Mongo’s ears perked up instantly.
His terrifying alpha sternness vanished in a single millisecond, replaced entirely by the wide-eyed look of a delighted toddler in a candy store. 🥭
He sniffed the dried fruit chip with extreme care.
He picked it up between two giant, leathery fingertips and popped it straight into his mouth.
A look of pure, unadulterated bliss washed across the silverback’s massive face as he chewed.
Koko slowly peeked out from behind his tree trunk, still holding his little green twig firmly between his teeth.
He couldn’t believe his eyes.
The fiercest silverback in the entire mountain range was standing in front of a tiny glowing cube, smacking his lips with pure delight like a baby gorilla.
Mongo looked up at Koko, then down at the box, then back up at Koko with wide, gleaming eyes.
He made a soft, warm rumpling sound deep in his throat—the universal gorilla signal for “this is the greatest day of my life.”
Koko slid down the rest of the mossy tree trunk until his tiny black feet hit the soft, damp soil.
He trotted over to his father’s side, keeping his eyes wide, bright, and intensely curious.
Mongo gently patted Koko’s head with a hand the size of a dinner plate, making a soft grunting noise of approval.
Then Mongo tapped the top of the box again with his giant finger, expecting another delicious reward.
Nothing happened.
Mongo frowned, leaning closer and tapping it a little bit harder.
Still, the box remained silent and shut.
The box was programmed with an interactive sequence designed to test primate problem-solving skills before dispensing treats.
Mongo growled softly in frustration, his massive shoulders tensing up again.
Koko watched his father’s patience wearing thin.
He remembered how the golden creature had touched the top right corner earlier, and how he himself had tapped the side button.
Koko stepped forward boldly, lifted his tiny black hand, and tapped the glowing blue symbol on the corner, followed by two soft taps on the side.
BEEP! BEEP! DING!
“Secondary subject interaction verified,” the box voiced softly.
The drawer popped open once again, this time dispensing three full dried fruit treats!
Mongo looked down at Koko with sudden, overwhelming respect and pride in his dark eyes.
His six-month-old baby had just unlocked the secret magic fruit machine!
Father and son sat down side-by-side on the lush jungle floor, sharing the sweet dried snacks beneath the dappled sunlight.
For the next hour, Koko and Mongo worked together like a seasoned dream team.
Koko would carefully press the secret button sequence, and Mongo would happily collect the treats, always making sure to hand Koko the biggest and sweetest piece every single time.
They had no idea that the box was actually an advanced research station placed by wildlife conservationists to study gorilla intelligence and social bonds.
