Valeria turned away from Alejandro, taking my arm into hers. She didn’t look back at the white roses, the abandoned cake, or the shattered champagne glass on the floor. She lifted the skirt of her elegant lace dress, holding her head high as we walked together down the center aisle of the ballroom.

As the grand double doors opened to the crisp night air outside, the sound of cameras clicking and hushed whispers faded behind us. Ricardo held open the door of the black sedan waiting at the curb.

Valeria stopped for a moment before getting into the car, looking back at the illuminated entrance of the venue. A soft, relieved smile washed over her face. The tears that had threatened to fall earlier were completely gone, replaced by a deep, quiet confidence.

“How do you feel, sweetheart?” I asked softly, sliding into the seat beside her.

Valeria looked at me, taking my hand and squeezing it tight. “I feel free, Mom. Completely free.”

The driver pulled away from the curb, leaving the lights of San Pedro Garza García behind us, as a new chapter of my daughter’s life officially began.
