part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
Arthur let out a tiny, high-pitched chitter that vibrated through the quiet afternoon air. 🐒
He dangled the shiny fruit sticker right over Barnaby’s nose like a fishing lure.
Barnaby didn’t panic for even a microsecond.
A true criminal mastermind never reveals his heartbeat to a petty blackmailer.
He kept his hand planted firmly on his bulging stomach, his arm resting lazily across his chest, and his eyes completely steady.
He gave Arthur a slow, unbothered stare that said, “You really think that little piece of paper gives you power over me?”
Arthur dropped down onto an even lower branch, holding out his tiny palm.
He made a quick grabbing gesture toward Barnaby’s chest.
Arthur wanted a massive bribe.
He wanted access to Barnaby’s secret stash of crisp eucalyptus leaves and polished coconut shells hidden behind the rock wall.
If Barnaby didn’t hand over his hard-earned treasures, Arthur was going to leap onto Greg’s shoulder and stick that golden mango label right on Greg’s glasses.
The tension in the shaded clearing was so thick you could cut it with a dry bamboo stalk.
Barnaby slowly shifted his heavy weight against the thick tree trunk.
The giant curve of his belly rose slightly as he took a deep, deliberate breath.
His heavy, leathery fingers tightened just a fraction of an inch around his soft midsection.
He looked at Arthur’s twitching ears, his nervous tail, and the eager, desperate spark in the little monkey’s eyes.
Barnaby realized something fundamental in that precise moment.
Power was never about holding the physical evidence.
Power was always about controlling the narrative completely. 👑
Barnaby didn’t reach behind his back for a bribe.
He didn’t try to swat Arthur away with his long, powerful arm.
Instead, Barnaby slowly, methodically let out the loudest, most resounding, soul-shattering burp the sanctuary had ever heard. 💨
It echoed off the tall wooden fences, bounced off the administrative building, and rattled the metal food bowls clear across the enclosure.
A thick cloud of pure, concentrated, unmistakable tropical mango scent exploded directly into Arthur’s face.
The smell was so intense, so sweet, and so completely overwhelming that Arthur reeled backward on his branch.
He lost his grip on the smooth bark, wobbled frantically, and dropped the golden sticker into the air.
The tiny sticker floated gently downward like a bright falling leaf in autumn.
Barnaby didn’t even have to raise his entire arm.
He simply extended his long middle finger a single inch.
The sticky golden label landed perfectly flat on the dark tip of his finger.
Before Arthur could regain his balance, Barnaby lifted his hand and stuck the label directly onto his own massive belly, right over his belly button like a glowing badge of honor. 🏷️
At that exact second, Keeper Greg came sprinting back around the wooden corner, red-faced and gasping for air.
“I can’t find those crates anywhere!” Greg shouted to his assistant, frantically wiping sweat from his forehead. “Twelve high-grade Ecuadorian mangoes, completely gone into thin air!”
Greg stopped dead in his tracks right in front of Barnaby’s shady tree.
He looked down at Barnaby sitting casually on the soft green grass.
He saw the orangutan holding his massive, impossibly round belly with both arms rested contentedly.
He saw the shiny, official fruit sticker stuck proudly on the exact center of Barnaby’s furry stomach.
And right above him in the branches sat Arthur, coughing frantically from the thick cloud of mango-scented air.
Greg stared intently at the sticker.
