Ethan reached for the folder with a hand that had begun to shake slightly. His parents and Lily crowded into the kitchen behind him, their footsteps echoing loudly against the bare walls. Lily dropped her heavy designer tote bag onto the counter, the thud breaking the heavy silence. She looked around the expansive, hollow space, her brow furrowing as she realized there was nowhere to sit, no television on the wall, and no sign of the welcoming luxury she had been promised.
Ethan opened the folder. The first document was the property deed, clearly showing Claire’s name as the sole owner, followed by a certified copy of the wire transfer originating from her private corporate sale account. Beneath that lay the bank statements highlighting the eighty-nine thousand dollars Ethan had secretly moved into his personal account over the previous week. Every single transaction was circled in red ink. The final page was a formal letter from a prominent family law firm, stating that divorce proceedings had been initiated and that Ethan had precisely twenty-four hours to vacate the property before trespassing charges were filed.
His mother, Eleanor, peered over his shoulder, her glasses sliding down her nose. She read the bold letters at the top of the legal correspondence. Her face flushed a deep, mottled red. She turned to her husband, Arthur, who was standing by the empty dining room alcove, looking increasingly uncomfortable.
Lily crossed her arms, her voice sharp and demanding. She asked where the furniture was, pointing out that Ethan had promised her the large guest suite on the second floor would be fully furnished by the time they arrived. She looked around the empty room, asking where everything had gone.
Ethan did not answer her. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Claire’s number. The call went straight to voicemail. He dialed again, his breathing becoming shallow and ragged. On the third attempt, a different voice answered the call. It was calm, measured, and entirely professional. It was Claire’s attorney, who informed Ethan that all further communication must go through her office, advising him to review the documents left on the counter and ensure he and his family vacated the premises by the deadline.
