The High Price of Greed
Part Two of the Story… 👇
Disinherited Groom
The silence that followed my departure did not last long. Back in that suffocating suburban house, Brandon and his mother spent the first two hours convinced that I would return. To them, my sudden exit was nothing more than a childish tantrum, a brief show of defiance from a woman they believed they already owned. Brenda assumed the cold afternoon air would humble me, while Brandon confidently wagered that I would be back before dinner, begging for forgiveness and ready to scrub the greasy pots I had left behind.
But as the sun dipped below the horizon and the kitchen grew dark, reality began to set in. The house remained quiet. The dirty dishes still piled high in the sink, and my phone remained completely unreachable. Brandon’s initial irritation morphed into a boiling rage. He felt slighted, not because he missed my presence, but because his authority had been openly challenged.
“She thinks she can humiliate us?” Brenda hissed, pacing across the living room floor while Patrick finally muted the television. “She walks out on her duties the very first day? Who does she think she is? Brandon, you need to teach her a lesson. Call her parents. Let them know what a failure of a daughter they raised.”
Brandon sneered, pulling out his phone. “I’ll do better than that. I’m going to take what’s ours and leave her with absolutely nothing. Let’s see how long her pride lasts when she realizes she doesn’t have a cent to her name.”
That was the moment the trajectory of their evening shifted from arrogance to absolute desperation. Brandon remembered the wedding funds. In his mind, the $650,000 was his prize, the ultimate leverage to force me back into submission. He believed that by seizing the money, he would hold my entire future hostage.
He marched up the stairs, his heavy footsteps echoing through the house, with Brenda following close behind. They burst into the bedroom, expecting to find remnants of my panic. Instead, the room was immaculately tidy, except for the nightstand. There, bathed in the dim light of the bedside lamp, sat my diamond wedding ring, resting precisely next to our framed wedding photograph. Next to it was an empty, decorative box that had once held the cash envelopes from our guests.
Brandon grabbed his laptop from the desk, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he logged into the joint banking portal they had set up prior to the wedding. His family had deposited $450,000 into the account, a sum they considered an investment in Brandon’s total control over our new household. They knew my parents had added another $200,000, bringing the total to a staggering $650,000.
“Transfer it all to my personal account,” Brandon muttered, a cruel smile touching his lips. “Let’s see how she pays for a hotel or a lawyer when she’s completely broke.”
He clicked on the account balance screen. The digital page loaded slowly, the loading icon spinning torturously before the numbers finally snapped into view.
Brandon froze. The color instantly drained from his face…
