But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

His little fingers trembled slightly against the bright green rind.

Goliath looked at the tiny offering.

Then he looked into Kobo’s big, innocent, squinting eyes.

A soft, warm huff of air escaped the silverback’s nose, blowing Kobo’s forehead hair into a funny little cowlick.

Instead of taking the celery, Goliath gently lowered his gigantic hand.

He extended one massive, leathery finger and lightly tapped Kobo on the top of his head.

It was the ultimate sign of affection and approval from the leader of the troop.

Goliath then sat down right beside little Kobo, creating a massive, impenetrable wall of safety against the rest of the world.

The giant leader reached down into the deep grass beside him and pulled up a giant, perfect branch of fresh leaves.

He snapped it in half with a satisfying crack and held half of it out to Kobo.

Kobo’s eyes lit up with pure joy.

He finally swallowed his precious piece of celery, letting out a tiny, contented squeak.

He reached out his small, dark hand and accepted the fresh branch from his father.

Together, the giant silverback and the tiny baby gorilla sat side by side in the soft clover.

They chewed their afternoon feast in absolute harmony, completely unbothered by mischievous parrots or jealous brothers.

Kobo squeezed his eye half-shut once again, sinking his teeth into the fresh leaves with a victorious smile.

He had defended his snack, earned the respect of the king, and found the safest spot in the entire world.

Sometimes, the smallest acts of courage lead to the sweetest rewards and the strongest bonds.
