The small metal drive felt heavy in my hand, cool against my palm as the patio descended into absolute silence. Victoria’s guests, who had spent the afternoon sipping expensive champagne while my mother sat on freezing concrete, began shuffling toward the side gate. None of them wanted to be caught in the glare of the impending disaster.
“Nobody leaves,” Samuel said, his voice low and firm as he stepped forward to block the gate. His broad frame made it clear that his order was non-negotiable.
Victoria’s posture cracked. Her poised, high-society facade dissolved, revealing the panic underneath. She took a step toward me, reaching out her hand, her manicured nails catching the bright sunlight.
“Ethan, please,” she whispered, her voice tightening with desperation. “You’re listening to a housekeeper and a confused old woman. I’ve given everything to this family. I’ve sacrificed my life to take care of this home and your mother while you were away on business trips!”
I didn’t answer her. I looked down at my mother, who was sitting quietly on the garden bench where I had gently placed her. Her fragile hands were wrapped around the warm brown paper bag from the bakery, holding the cinnamon bread close to her chest like a protective shield.
Within fifteen minutes, a sleek black sedan pulled into the long driveway. Alan, my attorney and a trusted friend for over a decade, stepped out carrying a leather briefcase. He took one look at the tense group on the patio, the abandoned champagne glasses, and my mother’s torn sleeve, and his expression instantly darkened…..
