The Glass Harvest

The legal consultant on the phone confirmed what I had suspected for months: because the restaurant was registered entirely under my name as an independent sole proprietorship, every single unauthorized withdrawal constituted clear financial misappropriation. While the main dining room echoed with laughter and the clinking of expensive crystal, I sat in my small glass office above the kitchen, printing out three years of clean ownership titles, deed registrations, and bank statements. Every single penny used to open this building had come from my personal savings and high-interest kitchen loans that I alone had paid off.

Down below, the young hostess had disappeared into the back hallway, frantically typing on her phone. I stepped down from the office and met her near the dry storage area. When she saw me, her posture collapsed, the confident exterior vanishing instantly. She tried to stammer an excuse, her voice trembling as she realized that the lavish promises my husband had made her were grounded entirely in stolen capital. I did not raise my voice, nor did I show any anger; I simply told her to return to her shift and ensure every single guest at table one received immaculate service until the very end of the night.

Returning to the floor, I observed the spectacle with complete clarity. Evelyn was now holding court at the center of the room, loudly describing how she had managed to mold her son into the success he was today. Her friends were thoroughly impressed, indulging in the finest chocolates and rare dessert wines that my pastry chef had prepared. The women laughed at her jokes, praised her generous nature, and thanked her profusely for hosting such an extraordinarily expensive afternoon feast. Evelyn beamed with pride, reveling in the admiration of her peers while completely ignoring the hard work happening all around her.

As the clock ticked toward three in the afternoon, the grand lunch finally reached its conclusion. The floor staff meticulously cleared the last of the dessert plates, leaving only empty glasses and crumpled napkins across the massive table. Evelyn leaned back in her chair, sighing with contented luxury, and gestured casually toward the server for the bill. She fully expected a complimentary sign-off or a meaningless token receipt that she could toss aside, as she had done so many times in the past. But today was entirely different, and the trap was finally set ….
