“Hey honey, just landed in Dallas. Checking into the hotel now. Love you.”

A cold sweat broke out across my forehead. The text seemed completely normal, the kind of message a loving husband sends his wife. But now I knew it was all part of the performance. I stared at the screen, my thumbs hovering over the keyboard. I had to reply normally. If I showed any hesitation or hint of distress, he would know something was wrong.

We knew he was operating out of the Southwest, but we could never find where he kept his primary records.”

He tapped the rotting ledger. “This is what we’ve been looking for. This contains the entire network.”

The room seemed to spin. Hearing it out loud made the nightmare real. The stable, quiet life I thought I had was completely gone, replaced by a dangerous illusion.

The agents informed me that for my own safety, I could not return to the house. They placed me in a secure hotel under a different name while they coordinated an operation to apprehend Miguel….
